Moon In, Mayor of Buk-gu, Gwangju, has called for a reassessment of the 'Exciting Zone' project being promoted around the Sandonggyo Bridge on the Yeongsangang River, citing concerns over flood risks.
On August 19, Mayor Moon stated on his Facebook page, "Since the Yeongsangang Y-Belt Exciting Zone project was designed based on existing flood frequency and water level predictions, it is necessary to gather citizen opinions and reconsider the project's safety and sustainability in light of recent abnormal weather patterns and recurring flood risks."
The Exciting Zone is a project by Gwangju City to invest 41.6 billion won in the Sandonggyo area of Dongnim-dong, creating an Asian Water History Theme Experience Center and water play facilities. The planned flood level for the project site is 19.24 meters above sea level, and the buildings are designed to be approximately 2.8 meters higher than this level.
However, last month, due to extreme heavy rainfall, the water level at major bridges in Gwangju exceeded 20 meters above sea level, causing flooding in various parts of the city. Announcing flood prevention measures, Mayor Moon expressed concern, stating, "If the water level of the Yeongsangang River rises, the buildings and facilities being constructed right next to it could also be flooded."

Gwangju City maintains that the risk of flood damage is not significant, citing the structural safety of the project. A city official explained, "The experience center is designed with a piloti structure, so flood damage is not expected. While some parts of the outdoor water play facilities may be submerged, they can be easily restored without affecting operations."
