KMA Chief Im Sun: "Advancing Meteorological and Climate Monitoring and Forecasting Systems"
Active Utilization of Advanced Technologies Such as AI
Strengthening Science-Based Climate Crisis Response
Expanding Customized Meteorological and Climate Services
On August 18, Im Sun, Director of the Korea Meteorological Administration, stated, "The vision of the Korea Meteorological Administration should be to become a science-based hub for responding to the climate crisis," and emphasized, "It is necessary to advance our meteorological and climate monitoring and forecasting systems by utilizing cutting-edge technologies."
In her inaugural address that day, Director Im said, "It is essential to further develop our forecasting and alert systems to protect public safety at the forefront by more actively utilizing advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), high-resolution numerical models, and satellite and radar observation networks."
Director Im stated, "National climate adaptation in response to climate change is inevitable," and added, "The Korea Meteorological Administration must become a national partner that not only forecasts the weather, but also provides scientific data to analyze and respond to climate risks in various sectors such as agriculture, industry, energy, and health."
Director Im said, "We will continue to strengthen our infrastructure to ensure there are no setbacks in developing the national climate prediction system, and we will enhance our support by providing foundational data for climate crisis adaptation measures prepared by central and local governments through the national climate change standard scenario."
Director Im emphasized, "It is necessary to expand the role of the Korea Meteorological Administration in the transition to renewable energy for carbon neutrality," and explained, "We will support the production of renewable energy such as wind and solar power by advancing meteorological resource mapping and wind and solar radiation forecasts based on precise numerical forecasting and AI."
Director Im also stated, "We will work even harder to protect public safety from earthquakes, which are a potential hazard, by introducing on-site alerts to reduce the time required for early earthquake warnings and by improving the accuracy of perceived intensity measurements."
