Putin Hopes Today's Agreements Will Open the Path to Peace in Ukraine
Russian President Vladimir Putin said of the outcome of his summit with U.S. President Donald Trump in Alaska, "I hope that the agreements we reached today will open the path to peace in Ukraine."
According to AP and AFP on August 15 (local time), President Putin made these remarks during a joint press conference with President Trump following the summit.
Addressing Ukraine and Europe, he stated, "I expect that Ukraine and European countries will approach all of this with a constructive attitude, will not create any obstacles through behind-the-scenes schemes or provocations, and will not attempt to hinder new progress."
While he did not disclose specific details of the agreements, he said, "I agreed with President Trump's view that security guarantees are needed for Ukraine," and added, "We are ready to begin the relevant work."
Regarding the atmosphere at the negotiations, he described it as "constructive and mutually respectful."
Local media interpreted that President Putin expects the agreements reached at the summit to serve as a starting point for resolving the conflict with Ukraine and restoring U.S.-Russia relations.
