Launched in 2007, the Sejong Arts Academy has been running at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts for 18 years, consistently receiving positive responses from citizens who wish to experience and study the arts up close. For the fall semester, in addition to popular courses that sold out in the first half of the year, two new classes have been added: "Urban Drawing Basics" and "Landscape Watercolor for Travel Sketching."
This semester, the "Musical Vocal Station" course will be newly led by vocal expert Kim Minjeong, who became the first Korean to earn Estill Voice Training Master Trainer certification and has coached numerous musical actors. The course offers systematic and practical vocal training for everyone from musical enthusiasts to aspiring actors. To enhance the professionalism of the class, the course time has been moved to the evening (7:00 PM to 9:00 PM), and the class duration has been extended from 90 minutes to 120 minutes.
"Hidden Voice," led by soprano Kim Eunkyung, is a signature, long-running course at the Sejong Arts Academy and consistently fills up as soon as registration opens each semester. Students learn various opera arias and songs, perform on stage, and transform into opera singers at the end-of-semester concert, showcasing their unique musical charms.
The course "Your Words Speak for You," taught by announcer Yoo Jeonga, explores the power of speech, from everyday conversations to public speaking on stage.
For those interested in hands-on art activities using simple art tools, practical drawing courses such as "Urban Drawing" and "Landscape Watercolor for Travel Sketching" are available. Students can experience observing and sketching urban travel destinations and everyday spaces. This semester, two new courses have been introduced: "Urban Drawing Basics" by drawing artist Park Inhong and "Intermediate Landscape Watercolor for Travel Sketching" by drawing artist Jaejaenamu. Advanced techniques will be further explored in "Intermediate Urban Drawing" by Jeong Seungbin and "Advanced Urban Drawing" by Jeong Yeonseok, both of which continue from the first half of the year.
Theory courses are also offered, providing vivid insights and in-depth knowledge across genres such as musicals, classical music, and visual arts.
The course "The Birth of Musicals," led by Ko Heekyung, Dean of the Graduate School of Performing Arts at Hongik University, will focus on "West End Musicals" as its theme for the fall semester. Dean Ko visited London, England, this summer to observe the local performing arts scene and personally experienced the growing K-musical phenomenon on British stages. In this course, she will vividly share the latest hit productions and stage trends from the West End, as well as the present and future of Korean original musicals that are attracting attention from British audiences.
"Classics with Stories," taught by music columnist Choi Eungyu, is a course that delves deeply into famous classical masterpieces familiar to the public. The class systematically explores the lives and backgrounds of composers such as Beethoven, Vivaldi, and Tchaikovsky, as well as key points for appreciating their music.
"Classical Brunch," led by pianist Kim Jooyoung, is a special live lecture concert held in the heart of Gwanghwamun, featuring high-quality classical performances and musical anecdotes from different performers each week. The audience can feel the depth and charm of music even more by closely interacting with the performers on stage.
