'Putin Ally' Russian State Duma Speaker to Visit North Korea on August 14-15 to Celebrate Liberation Day
A Russian parliamentary delegation led by Vyacheslav Volodin, Speaker of the State Duma, will visit North Korea from August 14 to 15, according to a report by the Korean Central News Agency on August 12.
According to the report, the visit is being made at the invitation of North Korea's Supreme People's Assembly to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Liberation Day. North Korea commemorates Liberation Day as 'Day of the Liberation of the Fatherland.'
On the same day, the Russian State Duma also announced in a statement that Speaker Volodin, at the invitation of the Supreme People's Assembly of North Korea, will lead a delegation on an official visit to Pyongyang to participate in the 80th anniversary celebrations of Liberation Day. However, the names of other members of the delegation, apart from Speaker Volodin, were not disclosed.
Speaker Volodin is considered one of Russian President Vladimir Putin's closest associates. In February of this year, he visited India, another ally of Russia. During this visit to North Korea, he is expected to meet with Chairman Kim Jong Un.

Russia and North Korea, which signed a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty last year, continue to exchange high-level officials. In October, Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of Russia's Security Council and Chairman of United Russia, is scheduled to attend the 80th anniversary celebration of the founding of the Workers' Party of Korea.
