Yonsei University has awarded an honorary doctorate in political science to To Lam, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam. It is reported that Vice Chairman Cho Hyunsang of HS Hyosung played a decisive role in the conferment, both by recommending To Lam and by providing active support.
On the 12th, HS Hyosung announced that Vice Chairman Cho, an alumnus of Yonsei University’s Department of Education (class of 1990), personally submitted a letter of recommendation to the university. Vice Chairman Cho stated that he highly valued General Secretary To Lam’s leadership in opening up Vietnam’s economy and attracting foreign investment. In his letter of recommendation, he emphasized, “The consistent political stability and reform and opening-up policies demonstrated by General Secretary To Lam have played a significant role in enabling Vietnam to emerge as a key hub in the global supply chain.”

View original imageVice Chairman Cho has expanded economic networks between Korea and Vietnam by serving as Chairman of the Korea-Vietnam Economic Cooperation Committee and as Chairman of the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC). In July of last year, he met with Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh during his visit to Korea to propose cooperation measures with HS Hyosung, and later that month, he personally delivered an invitation to attend the APEC Summit to President Vo Van Thuong in Haiphong, Vietnam, where they discussed expanding economic exchanges.
Over the past 20 years, HS Hyosung Group has established large-scale production bases in Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Nai, and Gangnam, becoming one of the largest Korean investors in Vietnam. Vice Chairman Cho is credited with strengthening the economic partnership between the two countries by taking the lead in building trust and maintaining close communication with the Vietnamese government throughout the investment expansion process.

This honorary doctorate is regarded as more than a diplomatic gesture; it is seen as a model case of practical economic diplomacy and private-sector diplomacy, achieved through the tangible results accumulated by Vice Chairman Cho.
