The Jeonnam Provincial Council has made a direct request to the central government to include the establishment of a national medical school at Jeonnam Integrated University?one of President Lee Jaemyung’s core pledges?as a national agenda item.
The Jeonnam Provincial Council’s “Special Committee for Supporting the Establishment of a National Medical School at Jeonnam Integrated University” (co-chaired by Shin Minho and Choi Seonguk) announced on the 11th that it had visited the National Policy Planning Committee on the 8th to strongly request the inclusion of the establishment of a national medical school in Jeonnam as a national agenda item.

View original imageThe delegation included co-chairs Shin Minho (Suncheon 6) and Choi Seonguk (Mokpo 1), as well as council members Kim Hwashin, Choi Junghoon, and Jin Hogun. During their meeting with National Assembly member Kim Moonsoo and the directors of Social Affairs 1 and 2 at the National Policy Planning Committee, the delegation highlighted the fact that Jeonnam is the only region in the country without a medical school and requested active support for the inclusion of this issue as a national agenda item.
Co-chair Shin Minho emphasized, “The establishment of a national medical school in Jeonnam is not simply a regional issue, but a national responsibility. With National Suncheon University and National Mokpo University having already agreed to merge and jointly prepare for the establishment of a medical school, now is the optimal time.” He added, “This issue can no longer be postponed. It must be included as a national agenda item.”
Co-chair Choi Seonguk stated, “Establishing a national medical school in Jeonnam is a crucial task for protecting residents’ right to health and strengthening regional, public, and essential medical services. It was a pledge made by the President during his candidacy, and now it is time for the government to fulfill that commitment responsibly.”
Previously, Jeonnam Provincial Council declared its unified commitment to establishing a national medical school in Jeonnam, with Council Chair Kim Taegyun leading the proposal to form the special committee and all council members joining as co-sponsors.
The special committee consists of ten members: Shin Minho, Choi Seonguk, Na Gwangguk (Muan 2), Park Hyunsuk (proportional representation), Kim Hwashin (proportional representation), Son Namil (Yeongam 2), Choi Junghoon (Mokpo 4), Jeong Younggyun (Suncheon 1), Lim Hyungseok (Gwangyang 1), and Jin Hogun (Gokseong).
