Mokpo City Achieves 6% Growth in Seaweed Exports in First Half, Retains Top Spot Nationwide

View original imageMokpo City in South Jeolla Province recorded seaweed exports of $81.26 million in the first half of this year, marking a 6% increase compared to the same period last year and firmly maintaining its position as the top exporter among all basic local governments nationwide.
According to Mokpo City on August 7, seaweed exports accounted for 88% of the city's total exports of $92.16 million in the first half of this year, driving the region's export performance.
Last year, Mokpo also achieved a record-high seaweed export value of $133.08 million, securing the number one spot nationwide.
Building on these achievements, the city is fostering the seafood industry, with seaweed at its core, as a strategic industry. To this end, Mokpo is investing a total of KRW 113.7 billion by 2026 to establish a 'Seafood Export Complex' with a total floor area of 46,612 square meters.
In addition, the city is working to establish an 'International Dried Seaweed Exchange' to enhance transparency in seaweed distribution and strengthen export competitiveness. Through this initiative, Mokpo aims to improve price stability and credibility in the global market.

A city official stated, "We take pride in the continued popularity of Mokpo's seaweed in overseas markets," and added, "Once the seafood export complex and exchange are fully operational, Mokpo will undoubtedly establish itself as a leading city for seafood exports."
