Restoring Inland Fishery Resources and Strengthening the Income Base for Local Fishermen

North Jeolla Province's Imsil County is set to implement its 2025 fish seed purchasing and release project to restore inland fishery resources and strengthen the income base for local fishermen.

According to the county on July 30, 130,000 native crucian carp were recently released into major rivers within the county, and all release projects are scheduled to be completed by next month.

The released crucian carp are healthy juveniles measuring 3 to 5 centimeters, which have passed fish disease inspections and are considered safe stock. As omnivorous fish, they play an essential role in water purification and ecological stability, and are also expected to significantly contribute to increasing the income of local fishermen.

Following this crucian carp release, the county plans to sequentially release 4 million Semisulcospira libertina (daseulgi) and 20,000 Korean perch (ssogari). Semisulcospira libertina, a native species with excellent water purification capabilities, is in high demand as a health food. Korean perch, a high value-added species that is difficult to farm, is expected to have a significant impact through its release.

To enhance the effectiveness of the release project, the county is conducting fisheries resource surveys and post-release monitoring. Through these efforts, the county aims to contribute to the creation of a sustainable fisheries ecosystem and the strengthening of the fishing industry base.

County Governor Sim Min stated, "Starting with the release of crucian carp, we plan to sequentially complete the scheduled releases of Semisulcospira libertina and Korean perch this year. We expect that this fish seed release project will play an important role in the stable augmentation of fishery resources and in laying the foundation for the sustainable development of the local fishing industry."
