This work offers a modern reinterpretation of the artistic value of traditional Baltal, providing citizens with a meaningful opportunity to experience a rare form of traditional performance art in Korea.
'Baltal' is a unique form of entertainment and a national intangible cultural heritage, where a mask is placed on one foot to perform.
This original performance uses only the feet and legs to manipulate masked puppets. Instead of placing the mask on the face, it is put on the foot, and the story unfolds through the delicate movements of the hands, witty banter, song, and dance, making it a unique Korean folk play. The sight of upper-body puppets wearing masks exchanging witty dialogue as if they are alive brings fresh enjoyment to the audience and represents the essence of Korean performance art, rich in humor and satire.
Although it was designated as a national intangible cultural heritage in 1983 due to its high artistic value, Baltal is now an extremely rare traditional art in Korea, with only a handful of troupes maintaining its legacy.
In this context, the Goyang Cultural Foundation's decision to present such a precious Baltal performance to citizens during Art Week 'Nuri' adds significant meaning to the preservation and succession of traditional arts. In particular, this performance is part of the Goyang Culture Bridge Art Week 'Nuri' project, offering citizens a special opportunity to experience and rediscover the value of traditional arts that are usually difficult to encounter.
The Park Eunjeong Pansori Research Institute will present 'Chunhyangjeon-Baltal Paldo Tour' at the Goyang Aram Nuri Saerasae Theater on August 6. This performance reimagines the classic novel 'Chunhyangjeon' by combining Baltal, traditional performance, and creative puppet theater, infusing tradition with modern creativity. While preserving the form of traditional Baltal, the performance introduces new interpretations of specific scenes from Chunhyangjeon, such as 'Chunhyang being beaten' and 'the reunion of the secret royal inspector and Chunhyang’s mother,' enhancing the overall quality. The harmonious blend of traditional Baltal humor and the dramatic elements of pansori is expected to create a special stage that audiences of all ages can enjoy.
The Park Eunjeong Pansori Research Institute has been dedicated to expanding the base of pansori and nurturing talent, broadening its connection with the public through modern interpretations of traditional arts.
Through Art Week 'Nuri,' the Goyang Cultural Foundation strives to revive the value of Korea's disappearing traditional culture and to provide citizens with richer and higher-quality cultural experiences by collaborating with local art organizations.
