Lotte Chemical Expands Life Cycle Assessment to Support Customers' Carbon Neutrality Goals
From Basic Petrochemicals to High-Value Specialty Materials
Establishing LCA Calculation Systems Across All Processes
Lotte Chemical announced on July 28 that it is expanding the establishment of site-specific Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) management systems to support its customers in achieving their carbon neutrality goals.
LCA is a method that quantitatively evaluates the environmental impact of a product by compiling a list of resources, energy inputs, and pollutant emissions throughout the entire production process, from raw material extraction and processing to use and disposal.
Lotte Chemical is establishing and expanding its LCA management system across all processes, from basic petrochemicals to high-value specialty materials. The Advanced Materials Division has been operating an LCA calculation system across all domestic and overseas processes since 2021. In the first half of 2025, the company completed the establishment of an LCA management system for all domestic sites in the Basic Materials Division.
Currently, LCA systems are also being further implemented at overseas sites of the Basic Materials Division. Based on this, Lotte Chemical provides product-specific LCA declarations, enabling customers to achieve sustainable management and proactively respond to global environmental regulations.
Recently, demand for information on environmental impacts such as carbon emissions during product manufacturing has increased, and environmental regulations in each country have been strengthened, raising the importance of LCA in the global market. The European Union (EU) enacted the 'Product Eco-design Regulation' last year and is considering introducing digital product passports that include information such as product-specific carbon emissions, chemicals, and recyclability. In addition, from 2026, the EU will impose a carbon tax on imported products through the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).
A Lotte Chemical representative stated, "We will actively support our customers with the information and services necessary to achieve carbon neutrality through our LCA management system," adding, "We will continue to pursue responsible product development and sustainable management practices."
