It is awarded to public institutions, companies, organizations, and individuals who have contributed to sustainable social development and environmental preservation.
Wando County received high marks for its leading efforts in promoting marine-focused carbon neutrality policies, including expanding carbon sinks based on seaweed cultivation, establishing an integrated marine waste management system, and creating marine forests.
In particular, the county has also worked to build a resource-circulating marine purification infrastructure, such as operating marine environment cleaners, running mobile eco-friendly purification vessels, and recycling seaweed by-products. In addition, collaborative projects with Hyosung Group and Korea Electric Power Corporation for the creation of marine forests and seagrass transplantation, as well as discussions with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on seaweed blue carbon certification, have been highly evaluated as domestic and international initiatives to address the climate crisis.
County Governor Shin Woo-cheol stated, "Wando is the capital of Korea's clean seas and the nation's leading fisheries region. As the sea is both the foundation of our residents' livelihoods and a precious asset to be passed on to future generations, we will make even greater efforts to achieve carbon neutrality and conserve the marine environment."
