Prosecution to Deliver Work Report to National Policy Planning Committee on July 2... Will It Address Separation of Investigative and Prosecutorial Powers?
Prosecution to Submit Third Report to National Policy Planning Committee
Expected to Present Position on Investigation and Organizational Reform
Draft of Government Reorganization Plan Completed
"Will Consult with Presidential Office"
The prosecution will deliver its third work report to the National Policy Planning Committee on July 2. As this coincides with the timing of the committee's government reorganization plan, there is growing attention on whether the prosecution will communicate its position regarding a possible reorganization that would separate investigative and prosecutorial powers. Last month, the prosecution submitted two work reports to the committee, but the committee rejected both, stating that the prosecution's proposals were insufficient.
Cho Seungrae, spokesperson for the Democratic Party of Korea, stated during a briefing on July 1, "President Lee Jaemyung did not make the pledge to separate investigative and prosecutorial powers with the prosecution's permission," but added, "Of course, it is necessary to listen to the prosecution's opinion, and the prosecution itself will need time to deliberate." When asked whether the report could be rescheduled if the prosecution opposes the direction of organizational reform, spokesperson Cho replied, "All options remain open, and the final decision will be made by the president." On the same day, Prosecutor General Shim Ujeong tendered his resignation, approximately nine months after beginning his term in September of last year.

The National Policy Planning Committee has also completed a draft of the government reorganization plan and will begin full-scale discussions with the presidential office. Spokesperson Cho stated, "The government reorganization task force has resolved most of the major issues," and added, "In the afternoon, the draft will be reported to Chairman Lee Hanju, and based on that, the committee will begin consultations with the presidential office."
