Over 81.8% of Hand Dryers in Gyeonggi Rest Area Restrooms Found to Contain Microorganisms
More than 80% of hand dryers installed in rest area restrooms in Gyeonggi Province were found to contain general bacteria and other microorganisms.
The Gyeonggi-do Institute of Health and Environment announced on June 23 that it had conducted a microbial contamination survey on 105 hand dryers installed at 25 highway rest areas in the province from March to May. As a result, pathogenic microorganisms were detected in 1 unit (0.9%), and general bacteria were detected in 85 units (80.9%).
The hygiene inspection of public restrooms at highway rest areas was carried out following a recommendation from the Health and Welfare Committee of the Gyeonggi Provincial Council during an administrative audit last year.

The level of general bacteria was up to 1,200 CFU (meaning there are 1,200 microorganisms capable of forming colonies in the sample) per unit, which is lower than the food standard for snacks (10,000 CFU).
The hand dryer in which Staphylococcus aureus was detected was immediately reported to Korea Expressway Corporation, which then replaced the filter and cleaned the interior. Upon retesting, no microorganisms were detected.
