The Jinju Police Station in Gyeongnam announced on June 19 that they had apprehended and detained Mr. A for repeatedly committing assault, battery, and obstruction of business against residents and small business owners while under the influence of alcohol.
According to the police, from May 14 to May 27, Mr. A is accused of causing disturbances, assaulting people, and interfering with business on four occasions while intoxicated near his residence in Jinju.
On May 14 at around 5:18 a.m., he caused a commotion by shouting loudly on a street in Sangdae-dong, Jinju. When a resident protested his behavior, Mr. A grabbed the resident by the neck and poured soju on him, among other acts of assault.
Later that morning, at approximately 9:51 a.m., he created another disturbance at a restaurant in Sangdae-dong by pushing and slapping a staff member who refused to serve him food due to insufficient balance on his card.
On May 20 at around 7:10 p.m., he approached an elderly resident sitting on a bench in a plaza in Sangdae-dong and, without any reason, slapped the resident in the face three times.
On May 27 at about 5:47 p.m., while watching a game of Yutnori at the Namgang riverside park in Sangdae-dong, he caused a disturbance, grabbed a resident who tried to stop him by the neck, threw the person to the ground, and kicked him.
The police conducted an investigation based on victim statements and closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage, obtained an arrest warrant, and apprehended Mr. A on June 11 while he was wandering near the victim's residence.
A police official stated, "Due to the habitual nature of local neighborhood offenders, they often repeatedly target the same residents, and as a result, many victims are afraid of retaliation and are unable to properly report the damage."
The official added, "In order to ensure a swift arrest and prevent further harm, it is essential for victims to report incidents promptly. We ask that anyone who witnesses or experiences alcohol-related violence report it to 112 immediately, regardless of the severity, and cooperate with the authorities."
The police further stated, "To protect the peaceful daily lives of citizens, we are conducting a special crackdown on neighborhood violence until June 30. We will respond strictly to livelihood-related violent crimes, including neighborhood violence."
