Gyeonggi Office of Education Develops and Operates AI Essay and Short-Answer Assessment System
The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education has developed and is operating the 'Hi-Learning Artificial Intelligence (AI) Essay and Short-Answer Assessment System' to foster talent needed for the future society and to ensure fair evaluation.
This assessment system was developed as part of the 'Future University Entrance Examination Reform Plan' proposed by Lim Taehee, Gyeonggi Provincial Superintendent of Education, in January of this year.
Superintendent Lim Taehee emphasized the need to establish a new assessment system to restore the essence of education and support student growth. He requested active efforts to utilize AI in order to: secure objectivity in grading essay and short-answer assessments; reduce the evaluation burden on teachers; and develop a system that can manage the entire process from scoring criteria to evaluation and feedback.
The newly developed essay and short-answer assessment system standardizes and supports the entire evaluation process. In particular, it features automatic grading of student answers and provision of feedback using AI, based on the assessment criteria and elements designed by teachers.
The assessment system will be operated through the 'Hi-Learning' teaching and learning platform of the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education.
Starting in July, the office plans to initially apply the new assessment system to first-year middle school and first-year high school students in Korean, social studies, and science subjects. It will then gradually expand the system to all grades and all subjects in the future.
Additionally, to strengthen teachers' ability to utilize the new assessment system, training will be provided to more than 4,000 teachers. The office also plans to support the policy implementation and pilot operation research group in conducting empirical research on AI essay and short-answer assessments and in discovering exemplary cases from the field.
