Special Prosecutor Min Jungki Appoints Head of Support Team
On June 17, Special Prosecutor Cho Eunseok, who is leading the investigation into the insurrection case related to former President Yoon Sukyeol and the December 3 Martial Law, selected eight candidates for assistant special prosecutor and requested President Lee Jaemyung to appoint them.
On this day, Special Prosecutor Cho announced to the media, "To facilitate the president's appointment of assistant special prosecutors, I have selected eight candidates and submitted the appointment request to the Ministry of Personnel Management."
Assistant special prosecutors, who are given the rank equivalent to a chief prosecutor, are responsible for conducting investigations, maintaining indictments, supervising and directing special investigators and dispatched officials, and handling media relations, all under the direction and supervision of the special prosecutor. According to the Special Prosecutor Act, the president must appoint six assistant special prosecutors within five days of the appointment request.
The number of candidates requested by the special prosecutor is eight for each of the insurrection, Kim Keonhee, and deceased marine special prosecutor teams. However, the number of assistant special prosecutors actually appointed is four each for the Kim Keonhee and deceased marine cases, while the insurrection special prosecutor team will have the largest number of assistant special prosecutors. Previously, Special Prosecutor Cho requested some candidate recommendations from the Korean Bar Association, which recommended attorneys Park Eoksu (age 54, Judicial Research and Training Institute class 29), Kim Hyungsu (age 50, class 30), and Yoon Taeyoon (second bar exam) to Special Prosecutor Cho.
