Osan Mayor Lee Kwonjae: "Complete Cancellation of Dongtan Logistics Center Is the Only Solution"
"Threats to Citizen Convenience and Safety... Will Damage the City's Brand"
Protest Rally to Be Held with Emergency Committee at Dongtan Lake Park on the 19th
Lee Kwonjae, mayor of Osan City in Gyeonggi Province, has announced that he will take the lead in completely scrapping the plan to build a large-scale logistics center in the Dongtan 2 District of Hwaseong.
On the 16th, Mayor Lee stated, "The 260,000 citizens of Osan must never experience not only transportation inconveniences but also threats to their safety," and emphasized, "The only solution to the plan for a super-large logistics center in Dongtan 2 is a complete cancellation."

If constructed as planned, it would become the largest single logistics center in South Korea.
Osan City has called for the project to be scrapped, as controversy has arisen due to opposition from nearby residents. The city has requested the developer to reconsider the project, and on May 22, also expressed its opposition during a review by the Gyeonggi Province Traffic Impact Assessment Committee.
Mayor Lee plans to launch a solidarity movement to push for the cancellation of the project. On the 7th of this month, he promised to form a coalition for the complete cancellation of the logistics center during a meeting with Lee Junseok, a member of the National Assembly from the Reform Party. On the 12th, he held a discussion with the Osan-Dongtan Emergency Response Committee, which is leading the opposition movement, and scheduled a protest rally.
In particular, Mayor Lee is scheduled to personally attend the protest against the construction of the logistics center, which will be held at 1:00 p.m. on the 19th at Dongtan Lake Park.
The reason Osan City is taking such a strong stance against the project is that if the logistics center is built, not only the immediate area but also Osan City, which is connected by road networks, is expected to suffer severe traffic congestion due to the increased number of logistics vehicles.
A city official stated, "By 2027, when the logistics center is expected to be completed, it is predicted that about 15,000 vehicles will gather on the roads near the site." The official added, "Furthermore, when the advanced system semiconductor national industrial complex in Idong and Namsa-eup, Cheoin-gu, Yongin, begins operation in 2030, traffic volume will increase exponentially."

Mayor Lee also demanded that Hwaseong City halt its unilateral administrative actions. He added, "Since the Gyeonggi Province Traffic Impact Assessment Committee has already called for cooperation between the two cities, Hwaseong City must not ignore the voices of Osan citizens."
