Special Prosecutor Cho Eunseok Meets with CIO Chief Oh Dongwoon
Special Prosecutor Cho Eunseok, who will lead the investigation into the 12·3 Martial Law-related insurrection case, met with Oh Dongwoon, head of the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO), on the 15th.
The CIO announced that at 4 p.m. that day, Special Prosecutor Cho met with Director Oh at the CIO headquarters in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi Province. During the meeting, they discussed matters such as the dispatch of personnel and the use of facilities, including the office building.
Immediately after the martial law incident, the CIO deployed virtually its entire investigative staff?including the director, deputy director, two chief prosecutors, nine prosecutors, and 24 investigators?to establish a Martial Law Task Force (TF) and launch an investigation.
Subsequently, a joint investigation headquarters was formed with the National Office of Investigation of the police and the Ministry of National Defense Investigation Headquarters. They obtained an arrest warrant for former President Yoon Sukyeol and, after two attempts, succeeded in arresting him this past January.
Special Prosecutor Cho plans to request the dispatch of prosecutors who have investigated insurrection cases not only from the prosecution but also from the CIO. The Special Prosecutor Act for Insurrection stipulates that at least three officials from relevant agencies, including the CIO, must be dispatched.
