Delegation of the World Bank-Hosted 'Global Seaweed Summit' Visits Gijang-gun Fisheries Resources Research Center

View original imageThe 'Global Seaweed Summit 2025' is an international conference organized by the World Bank, which was held in Busan from May 28 to May 29.
This conference was attended by more than 100 participants, including delegations from governments around the world, international organizations, and experts from academia and industry, as well as the World Bank Group. They discussed the sustainability of the seaweed industry and ways to enhance global cooperation.
This visit was arranged as a side event of the summit. Participants observed advanced technologies in Korea's seaweed sector and examples of marine resource management on site, and explored possibilities for climate change response and sustainable cooperation.
On May 30, the delegation visited the Gijang-gun Fisheries Resources Research Center, where they toured seaweed aquaculture and cultivation facilities and received explanations about research achievements, including ▲development of seaweed-based biomaterials and ▲carbon absorption effects. It was reported that there was significant interest in the ongoing marine ecosystem management cases in the waters of Gijang.
Mayor Jeong Jongbok stated, "Gijang-gun is actively seeking solutions for sustainable marine industries through the seaweed sector," and added, "I hope this visit will serve as an opportunity for practical cooperation that goes beyond technological exchanges between countries."
The Gijang-gun Fisheries Resources Research Center has accumulated practical technologies in various fields, including ▲seaweed seed cultivation, ▲creation of marine forests, and ▲coastal ecosystem restoration. It is recognized as a leading research institution that continues scientific research in response to changes in the marine environment.
