Jeonnam Assembly Member Na Kwangguk Proposes Ordinance on Compensation for Firefighting Losses
"Ensuring Stable Field Operations... Protection and Respect for Injured and Fallen Firefighters"
Clear Procedures and Standards for Compensation of Losses During Lawful Firefighting Activities
Na Kwangguk, a member of the Jeonnam Provincial Assembly (Democratic Party of Korea, Muan 2), has initiated the enactment of an ordinance to ensure stable field activities for firefighters and to protect firefighters who are injured or killed in the line of duty.
According to the Jeonnam Provincial Assembly on June 9, Assembly Member Na has proposed the "Jeollanam-do Ordinance on Compensation for Losses Incurred During Firefighting Activities." The ordinance includes detailed procedures for filing claims, compensation standards, and the establishment and operation of a committee to review compensation eligibility for losses incurred by firefighting units belonging to the Jeonnam Fire Headquarters during lawful firefighting activities.
In particular, the ordinance stipulates that firefighters who suffer harm while carrying out orders to engage in firefighting activities, as prescribed by the Firefighting Framework Act, are also eligible for compensation.
Assembly Member Na stated, "Although firefighters are the reason our society remains safe, it is unreasonable to ask them to bear the losses themselves," emphasizing the need for institutional support so that firefighters can focus solely on their duties in the field. He added, "Those who have made sacrifices to save lives, even when it was not their responsibility, deserve proper recognition and compensation."
The proposed ordinance is scheduled to undergo final review and a vote at the plenary session of the Jeonnam Provincial Assembly on June 17, after which it is expected to be enacted.
