Incheon City to Participate in Korea-US Joint Marine Algae Biomass Technology Development
Incheon City is set to embark on the development of technology for the national public project, the "Korea-US Joint Marine Algae Biomass (Biological Organism) Production System."
The city announced on June 9 that it has been selected for a project by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and, over the next five years, plans to develop technologies for large-scale offshore seaweed cultivation, carbon reduction technologies based on marine algae, and an artificial intelligence (AI)-based integrated aquaculture management platform.
A total of 41 billion won will be invested in this project, with participation from over 30 domestic institutions, including the Incheon Fisheries Resources Research Institute. The project will also involve sharing specialized technology and data with the United States.
Seaweed is the most widely produced marine product in Korea and is a representative carbon sink, absorbing carbon dioxide as it grows. However, there are currently no certified cases of seaweed-based carbon sinks in Korea. Internationally, the three major officially recognized marine carbon sinks are salt marshes, mangrove forests, and seagrass habitats.
Through this project, the city aims not only to achieve large-scale production of seaweed in line with national greenhouse gas reduction targets but also to scientifically verify its carbon absorption capabilities and pursue research for global certification as a carbon sink. Additionally, Incheon plans to further industrialize next-generation bio-materials such as bioplastics and bioethanol using the produced seaweed.

An Incheon City official stated, "This project to develop and research seaweed as a new carbon sink is highly significant as a national-level cooperative initiative with the United States," adding, "We will do our utmost to ensure that Incheon establishes itself as a hub for new marine and fisheries industries and takes a pivotal step toward becoming a world-class carbon-neutral city."
