Hwaseong Songsan 'Village Community Center' to Break Ground in June
The 'Village Community Center,' a key facility in the urban regeneration project for Songsan-myeon, Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi Province, will break ground in June 2025.
The Hwaseong Songsan Urban Regeneration Project, selected as a Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport contest project in 2020, is being implemented according to the urban regeneration activation plan. The project includes the creation of a "Street to Experience the Sea," operation of startup support consulting, revitalization of the local market district, operation of a renovation school, support for home repairs, and operation of resident capacity-building programs.
The Songsan-myeon area was the site of the March 1st Movement and once served as the central hub of daily life in western Hwaseong-si. However, due to large-scale development nearby, decline has accelerated, driven by the stagnation of local alley businesses, population decrease, and deterioration of the residential environment. As a result, an urban regeneration project is underway to revitalize the area by utilizing Songsan-myeon's historical and cultural assets to improve the residential environment, activate the local community, and revitalize local alley businesses.
The 'Village Community Center,' which is breaking ground this time, will be built at 687-8 Sagang-ri, Songsan-myeon, Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi Province. The building will have one basement level and two above-ground floors, with a total floor area of 2,247 square meters. The center will provide a variety of cultural and leisure services through resident-led spaces such as a village hall and village hideout, as well as visitor spaces such as a village archive and a community cafe.
The underground level will offer 58 parking spaces, while the ground level will be developed as open spaces including a pocket stage and relaxation areas. This is expected to alleviate parking shortages at the nearby Sagang Market and contribute to revitalizing the local commercial district.
