KHNP Selected as 'Excellent Institution' in Energy Sector for Second Consecutive Year in Disaster Management Evaluation
Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) announced on June 4 that it has been selected as an 'Excellent Institution' in the energy sector for the second consecutive year in the disaster management evaluation organized by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.
The disaster management evaluation is a comprehensive assessment conducted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety to diagnose the key capabilities of responsible agencies?such as central government departments, local governments, and public institutions?at each stage of disaster management (prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery). The evaluation has been carried out annually since 2005 to enhance the country's disaster management standards. This year, 340 organizations were evaluated.
A KHNP official stated, "In this year's evaluation, KHNP received high marks for its thorough prevention and preparedness efforts regarding lithium-ion battery fires and electric vehicle fires, which became major social issues last year." The official added, "KHNP has established a comprehensive plan to address lithium-ion battery and electric vehicle fires, replaced lithium-ion batteries inside nuclear power plants with lead-acid batteries to eliminate fire hazards at the source, and is making every effort to prevent fires by conducting joint training with fire stations using electric vehicle fire response kits (including fire blankets, insulated gloves, and protective equipment)."
Previously, KHNP became the first energy public institution to conduct the 'Ready Korea' drill organized by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, and was selected as an excellent institution in the Safe Korea Drill evaluation as well as in the disaster management evaluation for the National Key Infrastructure Protection Plan. With this latest selection as an excellent institution in the disaster management evaluation, KHNP has been recognized for its disaster management capabilities by being selected as an excellent institution in all three major disaster management evaluations by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety for two consecutive years since 2023.
