Incheon City Expands Installation of Smart Crosswalks in Children's Protection Zones and Other Areas
Incheon City is expanding the installation of smart crosswalks to create a pedestrian-centered and safe traffic environment.
From 2021 to last year, the city installed smart crosswalks at a total of 234 locations, focusing on crosswalks in children's protection zones and areas with frequent pedestrian accidents. This year, as of last month, floor-type pedestrian signals have been installed at 11 key points across 3 intersections, including Jakjeon Station intersection.
Additionally, by the end of this year, Incheon City will install floor-type pedestrian signals at 59 locations within children's protection zones and red remaining time display devices at 83 locations, aiming to prevent accidents that may occur to children, who are considered vulnerable road users, while walking.

View original imageThe floor-type pedestrian signal is a system that displays the signal in the form of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) on the ground at the crosswalk waiting line, allowing pedestrians to intuitively recognize the signal even when looking downward. In particular, as part of a policy to prevent traffic accidents involving children, installation is being expanded nationwide in cooperation with relevant agencies such as the Ministry of Education and the National Police Agency.
The red remaining time display device indicates the remaining time during the red signal, in addition to the green signal as previously provided, helping pedestrians make more accurate decisions and wait accordingly.
