'Court Detention' of Chairman Cho Hyunbeom... Management Vacuum at HankookandCompany Unavoidable
Chairman Cho Detained in First Trial Ruling
Shock and Uncertainty Ripple Through HankookandCompany Group
Concerns Rise Over Delays in Future Investments and Tariff Response
The management clock at HankookandCompany Group has come to a halt following the court-ordered detention of Chairman Cho Hyunbeom. With the court sentencing Chairman Cho to a prison term on charges including breach of trust, a management vacuum has become inevitable. There are growing concerns that HankookandCompany Group, which faces critical challenges such as responding to U.S. tariffs and securing technological capabilities for new businesses, may lose its central leadership and drift for some time.
According to industry sources on May 29, the internal atmosphere at HankookandCompany Group has reportedly been thrown into shock following Chairman Cho's detention in the first trial. It is said that internal stakeholders, refraining from making any official statements, have been unable to hide their confusion.
That afternoon, the 23rd Criminal Division of the Seoul Central District Court (Presiding Judge Oh Seyong) sentenced Chairman Cho, who was charged with violating the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes (embezzlement and breach of trust), to three years in prison and ordered his immediate detention. Chairman Cho had been on trial without detention since being granted bail in 2023, but with this sentencing, he has been detained once again.
As a result of this verdict, a leadership vacuum at HankookandCompany Group now appears unavoidable. While the company will continue operations under the leadership of professional managers, major decisions such as aggressive business expansion, overseas investments, and M&A (mergers and acquisitions) for securing new technologies may be delayed.
This case alone took more than two years from Chairman Cho’s indictment in March 2023 to the first trial verdict. If protracted legal battles continue in the appeals court (second trial) and the Supreme Court (third trial) while Chairman Cho remains detained, HankookandCompany Group may have to operate without its top executive for at least three to four years.
The most pressing issue for HankookandCompany Group at present is the integration with Halla On System, which was acquired earlier this year. With this acquisition, HankookandCompany Group has entered the ranks of the top 30 business groups in Korea. The top priority is to integrate Halla On System employees as members of the group and achieve cultural and organizational harmony.
Additionally, the financial structure of Halla On System, which has been consolidated into HankookandCompany Group's financial statements since this year, must be improved. Halla On System posted a net loss last year due to low operating rates in its eco-friendly vehicle parts division and the burden of research and development expenses.
At a management strategy meeting held in March, Chairman Cho called for strong structural reforms at Halla On System. He is known to have led the group’s overall decision-making process, from the initial acquisition of Halla On System to the post-acquisition organizational integration. The sudden absence of the owner has created a palpable sense of unease within HankookandCompany Group.
For Hankook Tire & Technology, the group's core affiliate, there are a series of pressing issues, such as additional investments in U.S. factories to respond to tariffs and the flexible expansion of production. In the global tire market, Hankook Tire has established itself as the seventh-largest company by sales. Among domestic tire manufacturers, Hankook Tire is the only company ranked within the global top ten.
An industry official commented, "While the company will continue under a professional management system, aggressive investments and responses to rapidly changing environments will become more difficult. Considering the economic value of a global company and its members, the detention of a business leader should be approached with utmost caution."
