Kim Moonsoo's Late-Night Attempt to Contact Lee Junseok Fails... Unification Collapses Before Early Voting
Visited the Members' Office Building Before Early Voting,
But the Meeting Did Not Happen
Kim Moonsoo, the presidential candidate of the People Power Party, attempted to contact Lee Junseok, the presidential candidate of the Reform Party, late at night on May 28, the deadline for unification talks, but ultimately failed to do so.
According to political sources on May 29, Kim Moonsoo visited the National Assembly Members' Office Building in Yeouido at midnight, the day early voting began, in an attempt to hold last-minute unification talks with Lee Junseok. However, the meeting did not take place.
After finishing his campaign schedule in Daegu on the evening of May 28, Kim Moonsoo traveled to Seoul. After inquiring about Lee Junseok's whereabouts, he received information that Lee was in a meeting at his office in the Members' Office Building and headed there. However, finding no sign of anyone in the office, Kim left the building after midnight.
Speaking with reporters, Kim Moonsoo said, "I came because I heard Lee Junseok was in the Members' Office Building, but there is no one here. The lights are on in Representative Chun Haram's office, but no one is there," adding, "No matter how many times I call, he doesn't answer. There is no way to meet him today."
When asked if he would continue to try to make contact ahead of early voting, he replied, "Not only for early voting, but I think we should keep trying until the main election day."
With the attempt at contact between the candidates falling through ahead of early voting, which begins at 6 a.m. on this day, the unification process has effectively collapsed.
