Dongjak District to Completely Overhaul Administrative Telephone Number System with District Office Relocation
Numbers to Be Reorganized by Department and Function
On May 27, Dongjak District in Seoul announced that it will completely overhaul the administrative telephone number system it has operated for the past 10 years, coinciding with the relocation of its district office. The change in telephone numbers will take place on the first day of the relocation. The move to the new office building is expected to occur in the second half of this year.
Previously, numbers with the 820, 828, and 829 prefixes were used interchangeably across departments, community service centers, and situation rooms, frequently causing confusion during civil service processes. In response, the district will clarify the purpose of each prefix and reorganize the numbering system to ensure consistency by function.
Department phone numbers will be unified under the 820 prefix, and the subsequent digits will be reorganized using a “departmental grouping” method, starting with 1 or 9. The 828 prefix will be designated exclusively for fax lines, while the 829 prefix will be reserved for dedicated lines for specific purposes such as disaster response and infectious diseases. The office of the district mayor, the secretariat, and community service centers will retain their existing numbers, taking into account the unique nature of their work.
In particular, an ARS (Automatic Response System) will be introduced at community service centers to enhance convenience, allowing callers to select the service they need when connected. To minimize confusion arising from the change, the district plans to actively promote the new system in advance through various channels, including its website, social media, and QR codes.
