The Joint Preparatory Committee consists of Sunchon National University, Mokpo National University, and Jeonnam Province. It is responsible for establishing a systematic foundation for the establishment of a national medical school, making proposals to the government and the National Assembly, and serving as a channel for communication and cooperation with related organizations.
Moon Seungtae (Sunchon National University) and Lee Sangchan (Mokpo National University), the vice presidents for external cooperation at both universities, serve as co-chairs. The committee also includes the heads of planning from both universities and the director of the Human Resources Development and Education Bureau of Jeonnam Province as ex officio members. The committee is composed of a total of 13 members, including the deputy mayors of Mokpo and Sunchon, heads of local medical institutions, and alumni associations from both universities. In addition, the committee is supported by an expert committee and a working-level committee to provide professional and detailed assistance.
The launch ceremony was attended by Myung Changhwan, Vice Governor for Administrative Affairs of Jeonnam Province, President Lee Byungwoon, and President Song Hacheol, who congratulated the committee on its launch and commemorated the occasion with the presentation of appointment letters.
During the launch ceremony, participants held hand placards with phrases such as "Sunchon National University and Mokpo National University," "Establishment of a National Integrated University Medical School," "Coexistence + Harmony," "Establishment of an Integrated Medical School," and "The Joint Preparatory Committee Takes the Lead," reaffirming their commitment to the initiative. In the subsequent meeting of the Joint Preparatory Committee, key agenda items were discussed, including a progress report on the establishment of the medical school and the composition and operation plan for the working-level committee under the Joint Preparatory Committee, led by the co-chairs.
Meanwhile, Jeonnam Province is the only metropolitan local government in the country without a medical school, facing serious imbalances in basic medical rights and emergency medical response within the region. In response, the two universities representing Jeonnam Province agreed in November 2024 to establish an integrated medical school for the unity and future of Jeonnam, and have since been working together on this initiative.
