Illegal Private Lending to Be Covered Starting in June
Blocking Measures Expanded to Message Sending Stage
The Financial Supervisory Service, the Korea Internet & Security Agency, and the three major mobile carriers will implement measures to block spam messages related to illegal loans or illegal debt collection starting next month, in order to prevent consumer harm.
On May 26, the Financial Supervisory Service announced that it would introduce an additional set of measures in June to further refine its "Spam Message Reception Blocking Enhancement Plan." At the end of last year, the Financial Supervisory Service implemented the "Spam Message Reception Blocking Enhancement Plan," and within five months, more than 200,000 spam messages were blocked.
To completely block the channels used by illegal private lenders who exploit the difficult economic situation faced by ordinary citizens, the spam message blocking measures will be expanded to cover not only the reception stage but also the sending stage. The scope of application will also be broadened from illegal financial investment to illegal private lending.
In addition, the spam message blocking system for illegal financial investment will be further advanced. To respond to new and increasingly sophisticated types of spam messages used by illegal operators, the authorities plan to identify and add new blocking keywords.
Furthermore, there will be active public awareness campaigns to raise the public's vigilance against financial crimes that harm people's livelihoods, so that not only can consumer harm be prevented, but also so that victims can respond quickly and appropriately if damage occurs.
