Mokpo Coast Guard Launches Joint Investigation with Relevant Agencies into Abandoned and Moored Vessels
Strengthening Management of Vessels Vulnerable to Marine Pollution
Abandoned or Long-Moored Ships Under Increased Supervision
The Mokpo Coast Guard Station has launched a six-week survey from May 19 to June 27 to investigate vessels vulnerable to marine pollution that have been abandoned or moored for extended periods along the coast or in ports, and will strengthen management measures.
According to the Mokpo Coast Guard on May 21, vessels vulnerable to marine pollution are those that have not been operated for a long time and have been left unattended in ports, making them highly susceptible to marine pollution due to hull aging and neglect by owners. Currently, 32 such vulnerable vessels have been identified within their jurisdiction.
This survey targets vessels that have not operated for more than six months, as well as those that visibly pose a high risk of marine pollution. The investigation will focus on assessing the possibility of flooding due to hull damage, identifying the types and remaining quantities of pollutants on board, and determining whether the vessel owners are properly managing their vessels.
Through this survey, the Mokpo Coast Guard will instruct vessel owners or managers to dispose of any remaining fuel oil and waste oil on board, and will continue joint efforts with relevant agencies to remove vessels and maintain ongoing management.
An official from the Mokpo Coast Guard stated, "Most vessels that have been abandoned for long periods are at high risk of releasing pollutants into the sea due to poor management and aging. We will continue to implement proactive, prevention-focused administration to prevent pollution incidents before they occur."
