Lee Jae Myung on SPC Samlip Factory Accident: "Structural Causes Behind Repeated Industrial Accidents Must Be Identified"
Lee Jae Myung, the Democratic Party's presidential candidate, urged the government on May 20 to conduct a thorough and swift investigation into the worker's death at the SPC Samlip bakery factory in Siheung, Gyeonggi Province. He stated, "Above all, the structural causes behind the repeated industrial accidents must be clearly identified."
In a post on social media that day, Lee said, "We can no longer allow a society where people risk their lives just to go to work."
He pointed out, "There was also a worker's death at the SPC-affiliated Pyeongtaek bakery factory in October 2022. At the time, the company's CEO apologized to the bereaved family and the public in response to social criticism over the working environment and safety management issues, and promised to prevent recurrence. However, I am deeply distressed that a similar accident has happened again."
Lee added, "When you look at the photos of the accident scene, you can clearly see the large letters reading 'Safety First.' Safety at industrial sites is not optional, but essential. As recognized by the International Labour Organization (ILO), a 'safe and healthy workplace' is a fundamental right of workers."
Lee emphasized, "While accidents can happen unexpectedly, industrial accidents must not be repeated. We must do everything possible to prevent them. The primary reason for the existence of the state is to protect the lives and safety of its people."
