Putin: "Fundamental Causes of Ukraine Conflict Must Be Eliminated for Lasting Peace"
On May 18 (local time), Russian President Vladimir Putin insisted that the fundamental causes of the war in Ukraine must be eliminated in order to achieve a long-term resolution.
President Putin reportedly stated in an interview with Russian state television on the same day, "The goal of this special military operation is to eliminate the essential causes of the crisis, create conditions for a sustainable long-term peace, and ensure Russia's security."
According to Russian authorities, "eliminating the fundamental causes" primarily refers to Ukraine abandoning its bid to join NATO, reducing its military capabilities, recognizing the incorporation of Crimea and the occupied eastern regions into Russian territory, and replacing the pro-Western government.
President Putin further emphasized, "This operation is for those in Ukraine who speak Russian as their native language and consider Russia their homeland," adding, "Russia possesses sufficient military forces to achieve its objectives."
