Conductor Myungwhun Chung Appointed as Music Director of 'La Scala' (Comprehensive)
World-renowned conductor Myungwhun Chung has been appointed as the music director of the orchestra at Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Italy, considered the world's top opera house.
According to the official website of Teatro alla Scala in Milan on May 12 (local time), the theater has named Myungwhun Chung as its next music director. His term will begin after the current music director, Riccardo Chailly, completes his tenure at the end of 2026.
This is the first time since its opening in 1778 that Teatro alla Scala has appointed a music director who is not of Italian nationality.
Myungwhun Chung has also been appointed as the music director of Busan Concert Hall and the soon-to-open Busan Opera House. He is currently serving as the honorary conductor of the KBS Symphony Orchestra. From 1989 to 1994, he served as the music director of the Paris Opera. From 2005 to 2015, he led the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra.
