Group Dispute Mediation Filed Against SKT Demanding 300,000 Won Compensation Per Person and Penalty Exemption
Application for Dispute Mediation Submitted to the Korea Consumer Agency
In connection with the SK Telecom hacking incident, consumers filed a group dispute mediation request on May 9, asking to be allowed to terminate their contracts early without penalty. Attorney Lee Chulwoo announced that he had submitted an "SKT USIM Information Leak Incident Group Dispute Mediation Application" to the Korea Consumer Agency on behalf of 59 SKT users. They are demanding compensation of 300,000 won per applicant for damages caused by the information leak, exemption from penalties when switching to another telecommunications provider, and immediate USIM replacement, including via courier delivery.

A group dispute mediation request was also filed in 2014 when the personal information of 9.8 million subscribers was leaked at KT. However, the Korea Consumer Agency dismissed the mediation at that time. Last year, in the group dispute mediation regarding the MapleStory "probability manipulation incident," the agency ordered compensation of up to 21.9 billion won for all 800,000 users. Attorney Lee stated, "It is desirable not only for consumers who file lawsuits, but for all consumers to receive compensation and for measures to prevent recurrence to be established."
