Reaffirming His Intention Not to Participate in the Presidential Election
Former Daegu Mayor Hong Joonpyo stated on May 9 that he would not accept the position of Senior Campaign Committee Chair in the presidential campaign of Kim Moonsoo, the People Power Party candidate, despite an announcement from Kim's camp to the media that he would take the role.
Through a press release that day, Hong said, "Candidate Kim Moonsoo of the People Power Party offered me the position of Senior Campaign Committee Chair, but I will not be accepting it." Hong is scheduled to depart for the United States on May 10.
In connection with this, Hong also stated on his social media, "I have already left the People Power Party and have made it clear that I will not be involved in this presidential election."

Earlier that day, Kim Moonsoo's campaign had announced in a press release that Hong had been appointed as Senior Chair of the Central Election Countermeasures Committee. The campaign further stated, "Former Mayor Hong changed his plan to stay in the United States after departing on May 10 and accepted the role of Senior Campaign Committee Chair to help secure a victory for Candidate Kim."
