Paju City Uncovers 141 Violations of First-Time Home Purchase Tax Reduction, Recovers 350 Million KRW
Paju City in Gyeonggi Province announced on May 9 that it had conducted a special tax audit in the first half of the year targeting taxpayers who received acquisition tax reductions for 'first-time home purchases.' As a result, the city uncovered 141 cases that violated the reduction requirements and imposed additional taxes totaling approximately 350 million KRW.
This audit was carried out to verify whether recipients of the tax reduction had faithfully fulfilled mandatory obligations, such as the requirement for continuous residence. The investigation revealed that many taxpayers had failed to meet these requirements.
The violations identified included 73 cases where individuals did not begin residing in the home within three months of acquisition, 48 cases where rental contracts such as jeonse or monthly rent were signed during the mandatory residence period, and 20 cases where the property was sold within the required period.
Paju City imposed additional taxes on these violations, including not only the acquisition tax that had been reduced but also penalties and interest.
The 'first-time home purchase' acquisition tax reduction program allows individuals and their spouses, if both are without property, to receive up to 3 million KRW in acquisition tax reductions if certain requirements are met. This policy is designed to support genuine homebuyers in securing their own homes.
Koo Jajeong, head of Paju City's Taxpayer Support Division, stated, "This program is operated with the goal of ensuring housing stability for genuine homebuyers." He added, "Since violations of the requirements after receiving the reduction continue to occur, we will strengthen post-management and guidance on the program going forward."

Meanwhile, even if a violation of the requirements occurs after receiving the acquisition tax reduction, taxpayers who voluntarily report within 60 days from the date the reason arises are only required to pay the reduced tax and interest, without any penalty.
