Canadian General Election: Ruling Anti-Trump Party Leads
On the day of the Canadian general election, Donald Trump, President of the United States, stated, "If Canada becomes America's cherished 51st state, we could quadruple the growth of the automobile, steel, aluminum, lumber, energy, and all other industries without tariffs or taxes." Since last year's presidential election, President Trump has mocked Canada, a traditional ally, by urging it to "become the 51st state" and referring to former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as the "Governor of Canada."
On the 28th (local time), President Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social, "Wishing the great people of Canada good luck," and urged them to "elect someone with the power and wisdom to cut your taxes in half, boost your military strength to the best in the world for free, quadruple the size of your automobile, steel, aluminum, lumber, energy, and all other businesses, and operate without tariffs or taxes." He then added, "This will happen if Canada becomes America's cherished 51st state."
He also stated, "The artificially drawn border from decades ago is no longer necessary," and added, "Imagine how beautiful this land could become. There are only positives, no negatives." Furthermore, he emphasized, "The United States can no longer spend hundreds of billions of dollars every year to subsidize Canada," and insisted, "This is something that cannot continue unless Canada becomes a state of the United States."

As part of tariff pressure, Trump imposed a 25% tariff on Canadian goods starting from the 4th of last month. However, items covered by the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) were excluded from this measure. In Canada, anti-Trump sentiment is intensifying due to President Trump's mockery and tariff policies.
In February, a Canadian roastery cafe posted on social media, "For the past 16 years, Kicking Horse Cafe has quietly called Americano 'Canadiano.' Please join us," in a message aimed at inspiring patriotism. The phrase "Canada Is Not For Sale" spread across social media, and it was reported that some shops began selling only Canadian products instead of American ones. Tensions were also evident during ice hockey games between Canada and the United States, with fans booing the opposing country's national anthem.
Canada is holding an early general election on this day due to the early resignation of former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who led the country for the past nine years, and the decision of his successor, Prime Minister Mark Carney. As the ruling Liberal Party, which has taken an anti-Trump stance, faces off against the opposition Conservative Party, there are projections that the Liberal Party is likely to retain power.

Mark Carney, the current Prime Minister and a former central bank governor of both Canada and the United Kingdom, emphasized, "I am the stable candidate to respond to the trade war with the United States," and added, "We must fight back against Trump's tariffs with retaliatory tariffs. This will inflict maximum damage on the United States and minimize the damage to us."
