Gwangjin District (District Mayor Kim Kyungho) designated the area around 11 Jayang-ro on April 17 as the "Jamajang Market Alley-Type Shopping District" (Merchants’ Association President Lee Myungshin) and completed the registration of the merchants’ association.
The "alley-type shopping district" system designates areas within local alley commercial zones that meet certain criteria as official shopping districts, providing various policy supports to help stabilize small business operations.
Jamajang Market, now the fourth alley-type shopping district in Gwangjin District, takes its name from "Jamajang-ri," the old name of Jayang-dong. The name originated in the Joseon Dynasty, when a ranch for raising mares was located in Jayang-dong.
The shopping district stretches approximately 320 meters in total length and covers an area of 4,135 square meters, with 82 stores currently operating. It connects to the south gate of the Jayang Traditional Market located across the street and has long served as a commercial hub closely tied to the daily lives of local residents.
With this designation, the Jamajang Market Alley-Type Shopping District is now eligible to participate in a variety of support programs, including facility and business modernization projects. In addition, it can now register as an Onnuri Gift Certificate affiliate, making it even more convenient for residents and expected to further develop as a vibrant commercial area.
Last June, the district revised the "Gwangjin District Ordinance on Designation and Support of Alley-Type Shopping Districts," and in December, further eased the store density requirements through an additional amendment. As a result, two new alley-type shopping districts have been designated this year alone. Currently, Gwangjin District has a total of 11 registered markets: 7 traditional markets and 4 alley-type shopping districts.
Kim Kyungho, Mayor of Gwangjin District, said, "I sincerely congratulate you on the designation of Jamajang Market as an alley-type shopping district. I hope this space, with its unique warmth and diversity, will become an even stronger center of the local economy. We will continue to actively communicate with merchants and provide all necessary support."
