The American Cancer Society (ACS) guidelines, which suggest that cancer survivors can reduce their risk of death by as much as 24%, are drawing attention.
On the 8th, Dr. Ying Wang, head of epidemiological research at the American Cancer Society, and her research team reported in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute (JNCI) that they reached this conclusion after tracking the lifestyle habits and mortality risk of over 3,700 non-smoking, obesity-related cancer survivors for an average of more than 15 years.
According to the nutrition and physical activity guidelines recommended by the American Cancer Society for cancer survivors, physical activity should be maintained to prevent weight gain. Adults are advised to engage in 150 to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous exercise per week (children and adolescents should engage in at least 1 hour of moderate or vigorous exercise daily).
From a dietary perspective, it is emphasized to increase the intake of green, red, and orange vegetables, legumes, fruits, and whole grains, while limiting red meat, processed meat, sugar-sweetened beverages, and ultra-processed foods. In particular, alcohol consumption should be minimized, and if unavoidable, women are advised to limit themselves to one drink per day and men to two drinks per day or less.
Analysis showed that survivors with high adherence scores of 6 to 8 had a 24% lower risk of death from all causes compared to those with scores of 0 to 3. The risk of death from cardiovascular disease decreased by 33%, and cancer-related mortality risk decreased by 21%.

Dr. Wang stated, "When diagnosed with cancer, people start thinking about ways to live healthier, and survivors want to know what lifestyle changes they can make to increase their chances of living longer." She added, "These results clearly demonstrate how choosing the right lifestyle habits impacts cancer survival rates."
