Haenam County Significantly Expands Coverage Items for Resident Safety Insurance

Haenam County in Jeonnam Province (Governor Myung Hyun-kwan) is significantly expanding the coverage of its Citizen Safety Insurance this year to provide broader protection for its residents.

According to the county on the 7th, Haenam operates the Citizen Safety Insurance by allocating county funds to support residents who suffer personal injury due to unexpected accidents and disasters in daily life. Notably, the Citizen Safety Insurance covers all residents without any separate enrollment process, playing an essential role in eliminating blind spots in resident safety.

Since its introduction in 2017, Haenam County’s Citizen Safety Insurance has paid out a total of 191 claims amounting to 900 million KRW to residents as of last year. The insurance provides compensation ranging from a minimum of 100,000 KRW to a maximum of 20 million KRW for residents who suffer aftereffects or injuries from various accidents and disasters, and claims can be made within three years from the date of the incident.

This year, the county has greatly expanded the coverage of the Citizen Safety Insurance from the previous 27 items to 40. Major new items include compensation of 5 million KRW for accidental death and disability in high-frequency injury categories, as well as the addition of fracture surgery expenses and crimes involving serious violence.

In particular, the county added 13 new categories that address concerns residents may realistically face, such as up to 20 million KRW for dog bite incidents, 10 million KRW for personal mobility device (PM) accidents, 200,000 KRW for natural disaster diagnosis consolation payments, and a one-time diagnosis fee of 100,000 KRW for heat-related illnesses. The Citizen Safety Insurance for residents will be renewed and operated starting April 1, 2025.

A county official stated, "With the goal of making Haenam a safe and secure city, we have expanded the Citizen Safety Insurance to the largest number of items in the province and the highest coverage among counties this year," adding, "To provide greater support for residents affected by various disasters and safety accidents, we will continue to closely analyze accident trends and further expand the Citizen Safety Insurance."
