By-election Final Voter Turnout 26.27%... Higher Than Last Year
The final voter turnout for the April 2 by-elections was tentatively recorded at 26.27%.
On the 2nd, the National Election Commission announced that out of a total of 4,620,908 eligible voters across 23 electoral districts nationwide, including five local government heads and the Busan Metropolitan City Superintendent of Education, 1,213,772 people participated in the voting. The turnout rate includes early voting conducted on March 28-29 (turnout rate of 7.94%) and absentee voting, and was slightly higher than the turnout rate of 24.62% in the October 16 by-elections last year.
The voter turnout for the by-elections of local government heads in five areas, including Guro-gu in Seoul, was 37.83%. The turnout rates were 25.9% for the Seoul Guro-gu district mayor, 39.1% for the Asan mayor in Chungnam, 61.8% for the Damyang county governor in Jeonnam, 46.4% for the Gimcheon mayor in Gyeongbuk, and 47.3% for the Geoje mayor in Gyeongnam, respectively.
The turnout rate for eight metropolitan council seats (Dalseo in Daegu, Ganghwa in Incheon, Yuseong in Daejeon, Bundang in Seongnam, Gunpo in Gyeonggi, Dangjin in Chungnam, Seongju in Gyeongbuk, and Changwon Masanhwawon in Gyeongnam) was 26.8%, while the turnout for nine local council seats (Jungnang, Mapo, Dongjak in Seoul; Ganghwa in Incheon; Gwangyang, Damyang, Goheung in Jeonnam; Goryeong in Gyeongbuk; and Yangsan in Gyeongnam) was 22.8%.
