Gwangju City: Bringing Cultural Performances Closer to Citizens
Every Saturday at Five Venues Including ACC Sangsang Madang
60 Performances by Municipal Art Troupes and Private Organizations
Gwangju City will once again bring cultural performances to various locations throughout the region this year, offering healing and relaxation to citizens weary from daily life.
The performances will be held in five district parks, where people can escape urban noise and bustle to find tranquility. These venues are accessible by public transportation, bicycle, or on foot, helping to embed Gwangju’s “Public Transportation, Bicycle, and Pedestrian-Oriented City” policy into everyday life.
According to Gwangju City on the 2nd, the “Visiting Cultural Performances” will be held every Saturday until November at five locations: Sangsang Madang at the National Asia Culture Center (ACC) in Dong-gu, Sangmu Citizen’s Park in Seo-gu, Pureungil Park in Nam-gu, Yangsan Lake Park in Buk-gu, and Ssangam Park in Gwangsan-gu.
This year’s “Visiting Cultural Performances” will feature a total of 60 shows, including 20 by the Gwangju Arts Center’s municipal art troupes and 40 by private organizations selected through a Gwangju Cultural Foundation contest.
The “Visiting Cultural Performances” are part of a “citizen-experience-oriented cultural policy” aimed at creating a unique performance culture in Gwangju. In particular, the Gwangju Municipal Art Troupe will present a variety of genres such as opera, ballet, classical music, and original works, allowing citizens to enjoy high-quality cultural performances in their daily lives.
The first performances will take place on Saturday the 5th at Sangsang Madang at the National Asia Culture Center (ACC), Pureungil Park, and Ssangam Park. At Pureungil Park in Nam-gu, the Gwangju Municipal Changgeuk Troupe will present a rich stage under the theme “Pungnyu in Gwangju,” featuring Gyobangmu, pansori, ajaeng sanjo, Namdo folk songs, and samulnori. At Sangsang Madang in Dong-gu’s ACC, the female pop band “One Bottle” will perform under the theme “Bookmark on One Bottle,” showcasing original songs and covers including songs by Kim Kwangseok. At Ssangam Park in Gwangsan-gu, “Oessi Beoseon” will present “At the Moment,” a performance blending popular music and lively gugak.
Kim Seongbae, Director of Culture and Sports, said, “Culture and the arts are important elements that invigorate the local community,” adding, “We will do our best to ensure that citizens can enjoy an even wider variety of cultural performances in their daily lives through the Visiting Cultural Performances.”
