National Assembly Steering Committee Convenes on the 31st, Led by the Opposition
Resolution Urging Appointment of Ma Eun-hyuk Also Passed
The agenda to hold an emergency issue inquiry at the National Assembly plenary session for three days from the 2nd to the 4th of next month was passed through the National Assembly Steering Committee led by the opposition party. A resolution urging the appointment of nominee Ma Eun-hyuk as Constitutional Court Justice was also processed.
On the 31st, the National Assembly Steering Committee approved the agenda to conduct an emergency issue inquiry at the plenary sessions held at 2 p.m. on the 2nd and 3rd of next month during the March extraordinary session, and at 2 p.m. on the 4th of next month during the April extraordinary session.
The Steering Committee consists of 28 members, including the floor leaders of each negotiation group, and is responsible for major matters related to the operation of the National Assembly, such as deciding the session and coordinating the overall agenda of the session, as well as discussing agenda items under the jurisdiction of committees such as the National Assembly Secretariat and the National Assembly Library.
Earlier that morning, the floor leaders of the ruling and opposition parties met under the chairmanship of Speaker Woo Won-shik to discuss the plenary session schedule, but no agreement was reached, so they decided to meet again at 4 p.m. The Democratic Party proposed three consecutive days of issue inquiries, arguing that discussions on supplementary budget bills, wildfire damage response, constitutional order violations, and sensitive countries were necessary.
On the other hand, the People Power Party stated that they would hold a plenary session only on the last day of the March extraordinary session, the 3rd of next month, and postpone the April extraordinary session. The ruling party argued that some agenda items, such as sensitive countries, had already been discussed in standing committees, and that the supplementary budget bill must go through the standing committees and the Budget and Accounts Committee before the plenary session stage.

The National Assembly Steering Committee, led by the opposition party, also passed a resolution urging the appointment of nominee Ma. Park, the chairman of the Steering Committee and floor leader, explained the agenda and its purpose, saying, "We urge Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, acting on behalf of the President, to promptly appoint nominee Ma, who was elected by the National Assembly plenary session resolution." He added, "The National Assembly supports the request for adjudication of authority disputes to enforce the resolution on the election of Ma Eun-hyuk and reaffirms that the National Assembly's (impeachment) request and litigation actions are valid and lawful acts."
