Kim Taekyun, Chairperson of the Jeonnam Provincial Council, along with 56 Democratic Party provincial council members, held a press conference at 11 a.m. at Lee Jaejong's campaign office and expressed their endorsement.
The council members stated at the press conference, "Candidate Lee has proposed practical pledges that will bring about a dramatic change in the lives of residents, such as creating a prosperous rural community, establishing a special education district, revolutionizing transportation, revitalizing the tourism industry, and making Damyang a great place to raise children," adding, "We will ensure that Lee's pledges and key projects for Damyang are fully realized."
They also emphasized the need for seamless budget support from Jeonnam Province for projects including the planned Mir Bridge (suspension bridge) at Damyangho Lake (14 billion KRW), disaster-preparedness village broadcasting system (1.5 billion KRW), Daedeokcheon local river maintenance (12 billion KRW), development of rural water supply in Daedeok-myeon (7 billion KRW), and the creation of a walking trail around Gwanbangjerim in Damyang-eup (3 billion KRW).
They criticized, "The candidate from the Cho Kuk Innovation Party is running for Damyang County Governor while neglecting his duties as Chairperson of the Damyang County Council," and added, "The idea that he can return to his chairperson position even if he fails in the election seriously undermines the function of the local council."
The council members further stated, "With the Jeonnam Governor and all local National Assembly members belonging to the Democratic Party, it is realistically difficult for a non-Democratic Party governor to work effectively," and added, "If Lee is elected as county governor, we will actively secure and support the necessary budget for Damyang's development."
Candidate Lee was born in Subuk-myeon, Damyang County, and has served as a Blue House administrator, deputy spokesperson for the Democratic Party of Korea's central party, chief spokesperson for Moon Jaein's presidential campaign in Gwangju, and head of policy media at the Democratic Party's Gwangju City branch. Most recently, he was appointed as chairperson of the Democratic Party's Damyang County Tourism Industry Development Special Committee.
Meanwhile, the main vote for the Damyang County Governor by-election will be held on April 2 from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., and voters must bring identification to cast their ballot.
