Busan Veterans Affairs Office Holds 25th Gupo Market March 1st Independence Movement Commemoration Event
Reenacting the 1919 Independence Movement
Led by Gupo Market Merchants and Workers
The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs Busan Regional Office (Director Namil Lee) announced that the 25th Gupo Market March 1st Independence Movement Commemoration Event was held at Gupo Station Square on the 29th.
The event began with a memorial service at the Gupo Market March 1st Movement Monument, followed by a ceremony at Gupo Station Square. The program included the national flag salute, singing of the national anthem, silent tribute to the patriotic martyrs, introduction of guests, reading of the Declaration of Independence, commemorative address, encouragement speech, congratulatory remarks, singing of the March 1st Song, commemorative performances, and the chanting of "Manse" three times.
Attendees included the Director of the Busan Regional Office of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, the Mayor of Buk-gu, the Director of Nakdong Cultural Center, and about 200 descendants of independence patriots. Performances were given by the Buk-gu Women's Choir, youth dance team Raccoon, and Panmunhwa Art Troupe, recreating the shouts and scenes of March 29, 1919, when around 1,200 market merchants and workers led the cry for Korean independence at Gupo Market.

Namil Lee, Director of the Busan Regional Office of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, who attended the event, said, "Unlike other regions where students, religious figures, and Confucian scholars led the movement, the Gupo Market March 1st Independence Movement was a purely civilian-led anti-Japanese independence movement, spearheaded by young people from Gupo?farmers, merchants, and workers?who utilized the market day and voluntarily participated. While such events can never compare to the sacrifices of our forebears, commemorating and honoring them holds great significance, and I hope this becomes one of Busan's representative patriotic memorial events."
