Sent Official Letter to GH Expressing Opposition to Transmission Tower Relocation
Mayor Lee Sangil Urges to Halt Forced Construction and Emphasizes Communication
The conflict between project stakeholders over the relocation construction of transmission towers in Gwanggyo New Town, covering the Suwon and Yongin areas of Gyeonggi Province, is deepening.
On the 26th, Yongin City announced that it delivered an official letter to Gyeonggi Housing and Urban Corporation (GH) stating that the joint development profit funds of Gwanggyo New Town should not be used for the relocation of the Gwanggyo transmission towers.

View original imageThe conflict over the relocation of the transmission towers began in 2010 when residents of Haemoro Apartments in Iui-dong, Yeongtong-gu, Suwon City, demanded the relocation of the transmission towers. Residents of Seongbok-dong, Suji-gu, Yongin opposed the relocation, claiming they would suffer damages, and the sharp conflict between the two cities has continued for 15 years. In particular, last month, Suwon City intensified the conflict by forcibly changing the project implementers for the transmission tower relocation from 'GH and Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO)' to 'Suwon City and KEPCO' through a public inspection without agreement from Yongin.
In the letter sent to GH, Yongin City argued that proceeding with a project without consultation among the joint developers of the new town violates the 'Development Project Joint Implementation Agreement.' Yongin City stated, "GH changed the project implementer for the transmission tower relocation to Suwon City without any consultation with Yongin, and Suwon City is trying to proceed with the project without agreement," reaffirming its opposition to the commencement and forced execution of the tower relocation construction.
Yongin City especially added, "Proceeding with a project (or changes) without consultation among joint developers also contradicts the 'Development Project Joint Implementation Agreement,'" and emphasized, "Joint development profit funds must not be used for the transmission tower relocation project." The city plans to take all legal measures if the joint development profit funds are used for the transmission tower relocation project costs.
