Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo District, Attends Turtle School Moving Slowly While Whistling
Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo District, attended the entrance ceremony of Hwibuki School held at Seongsan 2-dong Community Center on the afternoon of the 15th.
Mapo Hwibuki School is a program that connects university student volunteers with children with developmental disabilities, and its name is an abbreviation of "a turtle moving slowly while whistling." Since its inception in 2006, Hwibuki School has been operated by university student volunteers who take on roles such as principal, vice principal, and teachers to organize various educational programs. For three months, every Saturday at Seongsan 2-dong Community Center, they assist children with disabilities in learning and experiencing diverse play cultures, creating meaningful bonds with the children and their families.
The entrance ceremony, hosted by the Seoul Parents' Association for the Disabled Mapo Branch (Representative Lee Ji-young), proceeded with the introduction of executives and a commemorative photo session. There was also a time for students and volunteers to build rapport through a self-introduction card-making activity.
Mayor Park Gang-su expressed his gratitude to the university student volunteers of Hwibuki School attending the event, saying, "Mapo District's ranking as number one in the citizen happiness index is possible because of university student volunteers who become friends to neighbors in need and help each other." He encouraged them by adding, "I give a big round of applause to the university students volunteering to form important relationships with people in life. I hope you continue to become people who make great contributions to society."
