Yangju City, Exploring the Future of Resource Circulation with Citizens
Benchmarking the Gwangmyeong Upcycle Art Center
Yangju City seeks a new paradigm in resource circulation through innovative upcycling models
Gyeonggi Yangju City (Mayor Kang Su-hyun) recently embarked on designing an innovative resource circulation policy by benchmarking the ‘Eunhyeon-myeon Residents' Autonomy Association (Chairman Lee Gu-sun)’ together with the Republic of Korea’s representative upcycling landmark, the ‘Gwangmyeong Upcycle Art Center.’
The ‘Gwangmyeong Upcycle Art Center’ is established with two basement floors and four above-ground floors, covering a total area of 3,305 square meters (approximately 1,000 pyeong). It is recognized as a leading domestic upcycling hub where various exhibitions, design education, and events are held under the theme of ‘upcycling.’
This benchmarking was planned to build a creative circular economy model that goes beyond simple recycling of discarded resources within the jurisdiction by adding new value.
On the day of the visit, Jang Seok-chul, Head of Yangju City’s Cleaning Administration Division, Lee Yong-bae, Eunhyeon-myeon Chief, Lee Gu-sun, Chairman of the Eunhyeon-myeon Residents' Autonomy Association, committee members, and Cha Soon-jae, Chairman of the Eunhyeon-myeon Village Leaders’ Council, toured the advanced facilities and directly experienced the operational methods to explore possible cooperative measures for future application.
In particular, the delegation explored innovative spaces such as the exhibition hall, textile processing room, woodworking room, education room, and shared office of the ‘Gwangmyeong Upcycle Art Center,’ conducting an in-depth study of a future-oriented resource circulation system that integrates culture, art, and economy beyond simple environmental protection.
