Research has shown that the fruit pomegranate, known as a ‘superfood,’ is effective in preventing and treating six types of cancer: colorectal cancer, bladder cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, lung cancer, and skin cancer.
According to the American health portal 'The Healthy' on the 12th, a study published in the latest issue of the international journal Food Science and Nutrition revealed that consuming a diet including pomegranate reduces cancer incidence by more than 20%. Experts in pharmacy, nutrition, and chemistry from Korea, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, and Nigeria participated in this study.
The research team discovered through animal experiments that polyphenols in pomegranate inhibit the growth of cancer cells. Polyphenols have strong antioxidant properties that protect cells. Additionally, flavonoids and tannins help control chronic inflammation and slow down tumor development. Therefore, even individuals diagnosed with cancer can benefit from consuming large amounts of pomegranate to help prevent the spread to other areas. The team explained that these abundant nutrients aid in preventing and treating colorectal cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, bladder cancer, lung cancer, and skin cancer.
The research team stated, “Pomegranate suppresses the toxicity, growth, and proliferation of cancer cells,” and “According to previous studies, pomegranate alters various cancer-related signaling pathways, exhibiting anti-tumor and anti-inflammatory properties.” They added, “Including various vegetables along with pomegranate in the diet can reduce cancer incidence by more than 20%, which could potentially decrease cancer-related deaths by about 200,000 annually.”
The tangy and slightly sour taste of pomegranate contains a high amount of plant-based estrogen (female hormone), making it especially effective in alleviating menopausal symptoms in women. This is why it is called a ‘gift from the gods’ for women. In addition, it is known to boost immunity, prevent aging, improve skin health, and promote cardiovascular health. Pomegranate also helps improve levels of bad cholesterol and triglycerides, as well as lower blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes.

However, excessive consumption of pomegranate requires caution in individuals with a history of breast cancer. Some studies suggest that plant-based estrogen can bind to estrogen receptors in the body, potentially promoting the growth of uterine fibroids or ovarian cysts. Furthermore, pomegranate may interact with certain hypertension medications, so it is advisable to consult a specialist before consuming it if you are taking any medications.
